The head of these hooks is the same as my first hooks and I confess I've gradually moved away from that shape. For those who have a little better grip on the yarn, this seems to be, they say, the preferred head shape for really big hooks, which is useful for either very bulky yarn for a blanket, or when using multiple skeins of thick yarn at a time. I used this crochet hook a while back when I was working with three strands and a colorful yarn to create a custom camouflage style quilt and a large crochet hook created a very soft open weave quilt. What I didn't like about this hook was that it was nearly twelve inches long. and there were times when i felt like waving a magic wand when trying to crochet - this hook set solved that problem by making them only 6.5 inches from the base to the tip of the hook. This may seem short to some given the bulkiness of the stitches you produce. but I like it better. Yarn needles and stitch markers are an added bonus, but for me it was worth buying this set because I have large diameter hooks that don't feel bulky and I'm glad I did. 5 inches from the base to the top of the hook.
