First of all I would like to say that these wicks are excellent in every way. I'm only giving them 4 stars because they have a few issues. Now if you're making parasoy, soy, or paraffin candles, these wicks will probably work best. I make candles without wax so I don't expect them to work the same way. However, I do notice that after about 4 hours of burning, the wick seems to separate, creating a sort of twin flame. Otherwise, a coating is normal for a hemp wick, and milder waxes tend to dampen the flame. I've had better luck with smaller containers -- ie, containers with an opening less than 2.5 inches (think small candles in 3- or 4-ounce jars you can buy at Walmart for less than a dollar). Anything above that requires two wicks. Another tip? Extinguish the flame, do not blow it out. I use a metal can lid to blow out the candles and leave them there until the next ignition or you have smoking problems.
